I share the art of learning music with people of all levels, styles, ages and backgrounds. The only requirement is that the student has a nagging curiosity (if not yet lifelong passion) for music. Lessons are customized toward each individual’s personal taste and path of discovery, while building strength and wisdom of the foundations and fundamentals that matter for all genres, styles, and instruments.
Instruments I teach include piano; saxophone; flute; and clarinet. I also specialize in creative approaches and practice techniques for performance, improvisation, songwriting, and real-world music theory for all instrumentalists and singers too. A few students in my 2022-23 roster placed in auditions and won national competitions. But more importantly, many of my students learned how to play songs that they love.
Every student’s growth is based around two core principles:
discovering the music they love, and how to hear and play more of it
building a foundation of the techniques, concepts, feeling and magic in musical sound
Other things I teach along a student’s journey:
learning favorite songs by ear / reading
jazz improvising
movie scene sounds
ear training
harmonic theories and emotions
scales, chords, arpeggios!
rhythm concepts and fundamentals
pop and jazz piano styles
songwriting
using one’s voice to hear more deeply
prepare for a big audition / performance / recital
musical games
jamming
experimental sounds and free improvisation
real world advice for starting a band, navigate the music business, freelance careers, and/or music colleges
how to let music be a healing force in the world and in one’s life
